NEED FOR SPEED: MOST WANTED

As sure as Christmas comes every December, just a few weeks before it comes a Need for Speed game from Electronic Arts. This time it's the heavy-hitters from Criterion - the team that brought the world Burnout - at the wheel. Two years ago criterion delivered their first NfS game with a reboot of Hot Pursuit, this time they are giving a turbo boost to another previous NfS title - Most Wanted.

Once again,the action takes place in a large open world environment, along the lines of the one Criterion introduced to the racing in Burnout Paradise. This time, it's called Fairhaven City. Unlike most other driving games, almost every car is available from the get-go. Each car has events tailored to its particular performance and handling strengths. Complete them all in your own time, and your preferred order to rank up. Awesome exotica such as the Lamborghini Aventador LP-700, Marussia B2, and the Koenigsegg Agera are joined by down and dirty drivers cars like the Ariel Atom, BAC Mono and Caterham Superlight R500. Every car can be modified to make it drive and handle the way you need to complete the mission in the game and get the drop on the cops.

As the title suggests, you're the cops favourite person, but not in a good way. So as you compete against other drivers in NfS signature long-distance point-to-point races, you'll also have to dodge and weave to avoid the police's attention. In the single-player game, you'll campaign to be most wanted, in races that let you choose your own route to the finish, so it's as much about exploiting the shortcuts as it is about driving the fast and clean. But remember, the better you get the more the cops will be on your tail.

Criterion has been instrumental in bringing some of the best online and multiplayer features to the arcade racing genre, and this game is no exception. Along with the usual head to head realtime races, there are a host of other online competitive and even co-operative challenge modes. Most Wanted will continue to feature the innovative Autolog system to enable you to compete with friends even when they are not online through leagues, rankings and goals system. This time round Autolog is more closely integrated into the game world, rather than being separated out in the menu system.

As you free-ride around the game-world and pass each jump, speed camera or Jack Spot, you'll get a quick glimpse of the leaderboard. Think you have a chance? Just take a run up and have a go. Get the biggest air on a billboard jump, and it'll be your ugly mug that other gamers will see in their game.  

Most Wanted features the all-new CloudCompete social gaming system, and this introduces revolutionary cross platform competition and levelling up, so that progress gained using your profile on one platform can be continued on another.

WWE '13

WWE 13 is not the thirteenth game in THQ's well-loved wrestling series. In fact, it is the fifteenth! And as you would expect, this latest title is the biggest and the best yet. Taking a retrospective look at the Attitude Era of WWE (back when it was called WWF), the game features 35 classic characters such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and The Undertaker.

Built on the Predator Technology 2 engine, WWE 13 features more fluid animations than previous versions of the game, and buggy collisions and transitions have been fixed. The game engine now provides over 300 new moves. This is the first WWE game to feature "Spectacular Moments". This feature allows you to perform environmental moves such as ring breaks, barricade breaks, and mid-air catching.

Game sound is enhanced to enable both the crowd and commentators to be more responsive to in-game events.

Divas matches return, and have been updated to allow up to six Divas to compete simultaneously!

Previous games' Road to Wrestlemania feature is replaced with the Attitude Era Mode, which enables you to play through a season of classic Wrestling action over a two-year period. The player takes the role of several different characters as they progress through different chapters of the storyline. Video cutscenes help players to understand the stories, rivalries and feuds that defined that period of WWE.

The Creative Suite enables players to manage powerful in-game customisation. Not only can you create and customise your own wrestlers and divas, but you can also build your own arenas in which to battle. To top it off you can then edit your own story mode.

Online action has been beefed up too! Players can now test creations before downloading them into the game, and computer controlled players will fill in during online matches when not enough players are available. All of this will be backed up bey additional downloadable content packs.

ASSASSIN'S CREED III

Assassin's Creed needs no introduction, because despite the number on the box, this the fifth major instalment in the historical open-world action stealth series. The series jumps forward, once again, as we're transported in time and space from middle ages Europe to revolutionary America.

This is the first major break in the series narrative, and while the mission-based structure of the game is retained, the "Animus" characters and environment are all new. The main protagonist of the AC3 is a half Native American, half English man born Ratonhnhakéton, who goes by the English name of Connor Kenway. Connor's real-world modern counterpart is still Desmond Miles, who has been a constant part of the AC series. Continuing a trend that began in the last AC title, AC3 features more playable sections featuring Desmond.

As has been the recurring theme of the series, the Templar/Assassin conflict is the subtext that is being played out both in the modern world as Desmond, and in-game as Connor. As one would expect from the later timeframe, firearms feature more heavily in the game this time. But in line with the North American location, hunting bows and the Tomahawk also take their place in Connor's armoury alongside the traditional hidden blade.

Unlike the last two games, which were essentially very extensive level and mission packs for Assassin's Creed 2, this game is all new, and has been in development for three years, alongside the previous two games. As a result, we see a host of new capabilities as well as a host of new environments. For the first time in the series the player can brandish and use two weapons simultaneously. In keeping with the game's location and time period, hunting plays an important part in the game.

But it is the American revolutionary war that gives the game its main drama and drives the narrative. Connor inhabits the world of and interacts with characters such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Paul Revere while travelling between his native Mohawk village, the colonial frontier, Boston and New York. The Eastern seaboard will also be a theatre of conflict, and Connor can captain a ship and take part in naval combat. Connor does battle with the forces of evil as a member of the Assassin's brotherhood.

Medal Of Honor: Warfighter

It's often forgotten that EA's Medal of Honour pretty much invented the gaming genre that it now shares with Call of Duty, and like that game, it has evolved from a historical battle simulation to a modern theatre of combat. Warfighter is the 14th game in the series, and in it the player takes the role as part of Tier-1 Operations, fighting in various locations across the globe including Afghanistan, Bosnia,Somalia and the Philippines. Expect a realistic dose of undercover operations, because EA worked with a team of two dozen veterans of real life combat, including US Special Forces operatives.

The result is a gritty and visceral slice of combat action in which you the player can assume the role of six different classes of military operations: Assault, Sniper, Demolitions, Point Man, Heavy Gunner, and Spec Ops. You can play missions that require you to rescue hostages or assault pirate bases as you work to track down the dealers of an explosive, PETN. You can play as a lone wolf, but certain missions will require you to work in co-operation with one other player, as opposed to the four-man squads of the previous MoH game. You'll play as either Stump or Preacher. Kill-Streaks are back, and chaining your kills will affect the gameplay, and how your mission plays out. Keep dropping enemies, and the rewards will pile up as quickly as the bodies.

The multi-player game will enable you to play as one of 12 different Tier-1 units from any one of ten countries.

In both modes, the player will have a high degree of customisation ability on their weapons, enabling them to change barrels, muzzles stocks and magazines, to create a unique and distinctive gun.

The game has been developed by Danger Close Games, the current name for what was DreamWorks Interactive, using DICE's FrostBite engine, which was used in the just the multi-player part of 2010's Medal of Honor, throughout the game.

007 Legends

For the first time ever in video games or anywhere else outside of Youtube, 007 Legends features an original, overarching storyline tying together six classic Bond movies in one go.

The game not only takes the player through previous Bond plots, it also concludes with this year’s 50th anniversary and 23rd instalment of the franchise: Skyfall.

As a first-person shooter the game offers fast action challenges but also manages to provide the player with many way of completing them. As with the James Bond of movie fame, the Bond from 007 Legends gets to play with state-of-the-art spy gadgets and a huge arsenal of weapons, including Bond’s signature Walther PPK.

There are also, as expected, loads of high powered and exciting vehicles including Aston Martins and Lotus cars to take Bond and the gamer playing him from one exotic location to the next in the intricate plot.

This sees James having to track down iconic characters including notorious villains such as Gold Finger, along with their terrifying henchmen. As ever, the gorgeous and feisty Bond women also makes their appearances.

In fact, 007: Legends actually gives the gamer the chance to play as a villain, enabling them to experience game missions from the perspective of world-dominating pure evil.

As well as single-player story mode there is also multiplayer that includes local four-player split-screen game modes and online competitive gameplay with new maps, weapons and characters derived from the Bond franchise.

Added to the main 007 Legends’ game is a series of single-player MI6 Ops Missions which were first seen in 2011’s GoldenEye 007: Reloaded game and on successful completion will see the gamer’s score on the online leader board.

Players take control of a huge, futuristic carrier as it sails around lush, highly detailed islands, brimming with valuable resources – but guarded by hostile forces. Combining strategy, resource management, and edge-of-the-seat direct control, players must use brain and brawn to win individual skirmishes, large-scale wars and, ultimately, control of the islands.

The game’s core principles are based on the 1988 classic ‘Carrier Command’ – a game lauded on every format it was released. And now it’s about to make a triumphant return.

The inclusion of a new campaign mode allows players to get to grips with a series of thrilling individual missions which involve first-person firefights and land, sea and air battles – all wrapped in a heart-pumping narrative based on the second book from the Gaea Universe trilogy.

The free-roam strategy mode offers an infinite amount of gameplay. Players can define their preferred play preferences, win conditions, starting bases, etc. and generate a virtually unique level, suitable for a quick blast or a more tactical affair which can last hours.

It reinvents the classic gameplay of the original Carrier Command to deliver a truly next-gen experience.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

X-COM: Enemy Unknown began life as a remake of Julian Gollop's classic 1994: UFO: Enemy Unknown, which was released on Sid Meier's now defunct MicroProse label. But the guys at Meier's new company, Firaxis put so much into it that it evolved into a re-imagining. For the first time since that early iteration, console versions are available: for PS3 and Xbox 360. The game is powered by the Unreal 3 game engine.

Enemy Unknown takes place on a modern Earth, under attack from an alien invasion. Facing an unseen enemy of clearly superior technical capabilities, Earth's governments combine to create X-COM. Playing the commander of this global force, your mission is to create an operational base, research alien technologies, organise combat missions, and control your soldiers in battle. You'll dispatch aircraft to intercept and destroy or capture UFOs, and manage ground forces in their battles with alien invaders. All of this is controlled from your XCOM base. Yes, that's base in the singular, unlike the 1994 original, only a single base can be constructed and managed: this adds a strategic element to the game, because your base has to be defended at all costs.

The forces you command are not your own, but like the United Nations, you act a liaison between many disparate governments, and this adds to the tactical aspects of the game.

The Ant Farm view gives you an overview of the XCOM headquarters: you can then zoom in to individual departments to direct specific activities such as research and weapons construction.

Battle strategy takes pace on the Geoscape global view of the world, and you can be directing battle in many theatres of combat simultaneously. Ground combat is turn-based on an isometric-3D playfield. You directly control a squad of four-six soldiers or robots. As you would expect from a modern game, the user interface has been updated considerably from the original game, and gameplay has been tweaked to make it faster and more engaging. Players can make use of suppressive fire and active camouflage during combat.

One-on-one on-line combat missions enable players to control a squad each, and have a points budget to assemble and equip them before leading them into battle against your human opponent.

Console players will be happy to hear that they are not being offered a dumbed down version of the game. Apart from the mouse-based control method, which is exclusive to the PC version, the console owners are getting the same game as PC-gamers.

Dishonored

Dishonored is a quiet epic of strategy and assassination.

You play Corvo, the bodyguard of the Empress of Dunwall – a faded alternate history of criminals and disease. While Dunwall is cut off by the outside world in an attempt to contain its plague, the Empress is assassinated, Corvo framed and his mistress's daughter, Emily, taken. The night before he's to be executed Corvo is led to escape and from there he/you must use his/your skills in the art of murder to get Emily back and restore the rightful royal lineage.

It's tempting to say 'Dishonored is a stealth game', but that doesn't really do it justice. You can play it as a stealth game, but it's open enough that it really does encourage you to play the way you want to play. The environments are pretty substantial, for starters. It's not quite an open world, but the chunks of Dunwall you navigate are substantial enough that you rarely feel funneled in a particular direction.

So, faced with a given mission – assassinating a noble you're assured is a bad bloke, for example – you'll have to decide whether you want to find a long way round to their location, see if you can make it across the rooftops, look for a low route (possibly through tunnels) or go straight for them. And, if you go straight for them, will you try to stick to cover and remain unseen, stealthily kill everyone in your way or (and you'll need to be tough to pull this off) go straight down the middle, fighting everyone as you go?

The choices you make in acquiring supernatural powers (provided by the mysterious, corporeal Outsider) have a genuine impact on how you're able to tackle things, too. Powers such as Dark Vision and Blink work better for quieter, evasive play styles where Bend Time (bullet time, really) or Windblast are more offensive skills.

Pushing your decision making even further is the Chaos system. Where other games have offered you 'good' or 'evil' in-game choices, the Chaos system doesn't place value judgements on your actions. Rather, killing enemies willy-nilly produces more corpses, more rats and more disease, potentially leading to riots and affecting how NPCs interact with you. Bethesda says that your Chaos rating also affects the scenes you encounter and factors such as the number of enemies in the game. You really do have to watch your step in Dishonored, because there's every chance a bad decision will come back to haunt you...
